I Turned The Power of Habit into a Claude Code Skill: The Exact Commands

Duhigg's book explains the cue–routine–reward loop, but reading about it never broke a single habit of mine. So I turned all 6 of the book's core exercises into slash commands for my AI assistant — here's the full walkthrough.

I read The Power of Habit in 2014. I could recite the cue–routine–reward loop at dinner parties. I still bit my nails, still checked my phone at midnight, still skipped the gym when work ran late.

Knowing the loop and rewiring the loop turned out to be two different problems. Reading gave me a diagnosis with no treatment plan. So I did what I did with Atomic Habits: I turned the book into a skill for my AI assistant. Six commands, one per core exercise, each one running Duhigg's framework on my actual habit — not a hypothetical one.

Here's every command and what it does.

What a "book skill" actually is

Not a summary. A skill is a set of slash commands that walk you through the book's exercises interactively, using your real life as the input. You answer questions about your habit; it produces the outputs the book describes: a decoded loop, a keystone-habit plan, a routine swap.

It works in Claude Code, Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and other assistants.

The 6 commands

/habit-loop-decode (~15 min) — The foundation of the whole skill. You pick the habit you want to change, and the skill walks you through Duhigg's three-part anatomy: what's the cue, what's the routine, what's the reward. The hard part is always the reward — the real one, not the one you think it is. Output: a habit loop diagram of your actual behavior.

/keystone-habit (~15 min) — Duhigg's biggest idea: some habits matter more than others. When one keystone habit shifts, dozens of unrelated behaviors improve with it. This command identifies yours and builds a plan around it.

/craving-analysis (~10 min) — Cravings drive the loop, and you can't out-willpower a craving you don't understand. This one isolates the real craving behind your habit and gives you substitution options for when discipline isn't the answer.

/routine-swap (~15 min) — Keep the cue, keep the reward, change the routine. Duhigg's proven playbook for breaking a loop without fighting it head-on. Output: a specific replacement routine you can start tonight.

/belief-audit (~10 min) — Change sticks when a community or system believes for you until you can. This command designs the support structure that carries you when motivation runs out.

/organizational-habits (~20 min) — The loop mechanics applied to teams and companies. The skill adapts Duhigg's business cases (the aluminum company that made safety a keystone habit) into a framework for your own org.

A real run: decoding the midnight phone habit

My loop: I was scrolling in bed at midnight, telling myself I was "unwinding."

/habit-loop-decode didn't accept that. Cue: not bedtime — it was the phone on the nightstand, visible at 11 PM. Routine: scrolling. Reward: not unwinding — it was craving resolution, the itch of "what did I miss today." The book says the reward is the engine of the loop, and once you see it, the loop loses its disguise.

/routine-swap kept the cue and reward and changed the routine: phone charges in the kitchen, replaced by a paperback on the nightstand. Same bedtime signal, same "what's next today" craving — resolved by two pages of a novel instead of forty minutes of feeds. Two weeks in, the kitchen phone is the keystone: the morning scroll broke with it, unprompted.

That's the difference between reading chapter 3 and running it. The book teaches you to see loops. The skill makes you sit inside your own.

How to get it

The Power of Habit skill is on the skill page — $7 one-time. You'll log in first (your purchase lives in your account, so you can re-download it anytime), then check out. Six commands, installable in under five minutes via the setup guide.

If you want the building side too, pair it with the free one: the Atomic Habits skill runs the construction manual — scorecard, habit stacks, environment design — at $0, no signup. Diagnose the loop here, build the replacement there.

And if you plan to use more than a couple of books, Annual Access gets you all 43 skills for $79.99/year. That's what I use.
